We are most accustomed to seeing our faces in the mirror, leading us to develop a preference for that mirrored image, as suggested by the mere exposure theory. This theory suggests that repeated encounters with something increase our affinity for it. To enhance my comfort with images of myself and gain a more in depth self-understanding, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and paint a series of self portraits. Painting serves as my method of examining the world, allowing me to observe details around me that often go unnoticed.
My portrait series is an exploration into unknown yet familiar territory. I have never painted portraits or with oils before, but painting myself would provide a sense of familiarity. Throughout this artistic exploration, I developed a deeper appreciation for oil paints, appreciating their unrestricted and forgiving qualities. The painting process itself becomes a journey of self-discovery and exploration, using ethereal and otherworldly characteristics to communicate feeling and wonder.
